CDM Validation & Verification

What is CDM and Carbon offset scheme?

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the flexibility mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol(IPCC, 2007) that provides for emissions reduction projects which generate Certified Emission Reduction units which may be traded in emissions trading schemes.
The CDM addresses the second objective by allowing the Annex I countries to meet part of their emission reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol by buying Certified Emission Reduction unites from CDM emission reduction projects in developing countries.

Carbon Offset scheme

A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhere.
Offset scheme describes the systems and procedures that are used to certify and register carbon offsets. Different methodologies are used for measuring and verifying emissions reductions, depending on project type, size and location For example, the CDM uses another. in the voluntary market, a variety of industry standards exit. these include the VCS(Voluntary Carbon Standard) and the GS(Gold Standard) that are implemented to provide third-party verification of carbon offest projects. There are some additional standards for hte validation of co-benefits, including the CCBS, issued by the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance and the Social Carbon Standard issued by Ecologica Institute.

KFQ, as Designated Operational Entity (DOE),is responsible for CDM-related validation and verification/certification activities as well as for VCS/GS
KFQ shall make available internal procedures for carrying out its functions including, among others, procedures for the allocation of responsibilities within the organization and for handling complaints, and the fundamental policy to improve confidence in the CDM Assessment Scheme.
